The Complete Guide to Flyer Printing
Professional flyer printing services: A4, A5, DL, and custom sizes. Paper selection, printing methods, finishing options, and cost factors for promotional campaigns, events, retail, and direct marketing.
What Is Flyer Printing?
Flyer printing is the production of single-sheet printed promotional materials: typically unfolded or single-fold: designed for quick distribution and immediate impact. Unlike brochures (which have multiple panels and organized content), flyers are meant to be scanned in seconds: a bold headline, a compelling visual, a clear call-to-action, and essential details.
Flyers are one of the most cost-effective print marketing tools. They are used for event promotions, retail sales, restaurant specials, real estate open houses, grand openings, political campaigns, club nights, fundraising drives, and community announcements. Their low cost per unit makes them ideal for high-volume distribution: hand-to-hand, door-to-door, in-store displays, or as bag stuffers.
ZXC Print offers custom flyer printing on high-quality art paper from 80 gsm to 300 gsm, with digital (short-run) and offset (high-volume) production. We support standard and custom sizes, single or double-sided full-color CMYK printing, and a full range of post-press finishing options.
Related services: folded brochure printing, poster printing, sticker printing.
Standard Flyer Sizes
Choose the size that fits your content volume, distribution method, and budget. Larger sizes offer more visual impact; smaller sizes are more economical for high-volume distribution.
| Size | Dimensions | Typical Use | Distribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| A4 | 210 × 297 mm | Events, sales promotions, product launches, corporate announcements, political campaigns | In-store, hand-to-hand, door drops, window displays: high visibility, room for detailed information |
| A5 | 148 × 210 mm | Retail specials, restaurant flyers, club nights, charity events, quick promotions | Compact and pocket-friendly, easy to hand out, fits standard mail slots, lower postage cost |
| DL | 99 × 210 mm | Direct mail, insert flyers, price lists, event reminders, appointment cards | Fits standard #10/DL envelopes, ideal for mailing inserts, bag stuffers, rack displays |
| B5 | 176 × 250 mm | Educational materials, workshop flyers, association newsletters, mid-size promotions | Larger than A5 but smaller than A4: a compromise between impact and portability |
| A6 | 105 × 148 mm | Loyalty cards, discount vouchers, business reply cards, ticket flyers, pocket guides | Wallet-friendly, low-cost, ideal for high-quantity giveaways, can double as a coupon |
| Custom Size | Any dimension | Brand-specific formats, unique display holders, promotional items, die-cut shapes | Custom distribution channels: requires individual quote, minimal die charges for non-standard sizes |
Postage & Mailing
DL and A5 are the most economical for mail distribution. A4 may require larger envelopes and higher postage. Consider postage costs when choosing your flyer size for a mail campaign.
Hand Distribution
A5 is the most popular size for hand-to-hand distribution: fits easily in pockets and purses. A4 is better for in-store counters or window displays where visibility matters more than portability.
Bleed Is Mandatory
All flyers require 3–5 mm bleed on all sides to ensure the printed area extends to the edge after trimming. Without bleed, a thin white border will appear on trimmed edges.
Paper Options for Flyers
Paper weight and coating directly affect the feel, durability, and perceived value of your flyer.
| Paper Type | Weight | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Gloss Art Paper | 128–200 gsm | High-impact promotional flyers, retail offers, event flyers: vibrant colors and sharp images. 128 gsm is the most common, balancing quality and cost |
| Matte Art Paper | 128–200 gsm | Corporate flyers, luxury brand promotions, text-heavy flyers: no glare, elegant, easy to read under any lighting |
| Silk Art Paper | 130–170 gsm | Versatile middle ground: semi-gloss finish that combines readability with color punch. Great for photography-heavy flyers |
| Uncoated Paper | 100–150 gsm | Eco-friendly promotions, organic brands, community notices: natural feel, easy to write on, recyclable |
| Lightweight (Budget) | 80–100 gsm | High-volume leaflet drops, bag stuffers, bulk giveaways: lowest cost, still full-color capable, thin but functional |
| Heavyweight (High-end) | 250–300 gsm | High-end business flyers, high-end event invitations, luxury brand handouts: thick, rigid, feels like a card |
Flyer Printing Methods
| Method | Best Quantity | Turnaround | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Digital (Toner) | 50–2,000 pieces | 1–3 business days | No setup cost, same-day available, variable data (different text per flyer), instant proofing | Higher per-unit cost at volume, limited to ~350 gsm max, no spot colors |
| Offset (Litho) | 500–500,000+ pieces | 3–7 business days | Best cost at volume, exact PMS/Pantone matching, widest paper range (80–400+ gsm), sharpest quality | Plate setup cost, longer lead time, minimum 500 pieces |

What Determines Flyer Printing Cost
1. Quantity
Unit price drops significantly with volume. 500 flyers may cost $0.20–0.80 each; 10,000 flyers cost $0.04–0.12 each; 100,000+ drops below $0.02. Offset printing becomes more cost-effective above 2,000 pieces.
2. Size
A6 is the cheapest (smallest sheet). A5 and DL are similar in cost. A4 uses twice the paper of A5, roughly doubling material cost. Custom sizes may have additional trim or die charges.
3. Paper Weight
128–150 gsm gloss art is the most economical. Moving to 200+ gsm adds 15–30%. High-end textured or linen papers add 20–50%. The paper choice has the biggest cost impact per unit after quantity and size.
4. Single vs Double-Sided
Double-sided printing adds approximately 30–50% to the printing cost compared to single-sided. However, for offset printing, the press time is the main cost: double-sided is very efficient at volume.
5. Finishing
Lamination adds ~10–20% per sheet. Spot UV adds a flat setup fee (~$30–50) plus per-unit cost. Hot foil stamping adds ~$50–100 setup plus per-unit charge. Embossing starts at ~$80 setup. Simple trimming is included.
6. Turnaround
Standard (5–7 business days) is included. Rush service (24–72 hours) typically adds 25–50%. Same-day printing (digital) may have a flat rush fee. Proof approval delays can affect the final delivery date.
Frequently Asked Questions About Flyer Printing
What is the best paper weight for flyers?
128 gsm gloss art paper is the industry standard for most flyers: it's thin enough for cost-effective mass distribution, thick enough to feel substantial, and coated for vibrant color reproduction. For high-end flyers, 170–200 gsm adds a more substantial feel. For budget bulk runs, 80–100 gsm works well.
A4 vs A5: which flyer size is more effective?
A5 (148 × 210 mm) is the most versatile size: it offers enough space for a headline, image, key details, and a call-to-action, while being compact enough for hand distribution and pocket storage. A4 is better for events and window displays where visibility is paramount. DL is best for direct mail campaigns that fit standard envelopes.
How many flyers do I need for a campaign?
For a local event or retail promotion: 1,000–5,000 flyers. For a city-wide campaign: 10,000–50,000. For national distribution: 100,000+. A common rule: estimate the number of people you want to reach, then multiply by 1.5–2 (since not everyone who receives a flyer will read it immediately). Digital printing is ideal for test runs of 500–1,000 before committing to a large offset run.
Can I print double-sided flyers?
Yes. Double-sided flyers are very common and offer more content space. For digital printing, double-sided adds approximately 30–50% cost. For offset printing, double-sided is very efficient at volume (the press prints both sides in one pass). We recommend double-sided for flyers with detailed information, maps, or terms and conditions.
What file format is required for flyer printing?
Print-ready PDF/X-4 with 3–5 mm bleed on all sides, CMYK color mode, 300 DPI minimum image resolution, and all fonts embedded or converted to outlines. Provide single and double-sided files as separate pages. We provide free flyer templates for all standard sizes (A4, A5, DL, A6).
How long does flyer printing take?
Digital flyer printing: 1–3 business days (same-day available for small runs). Offset flyer printing: 3–7 business days. Lamination and spot UV add 1–2 days. Hot foil stamping and embossing add 2–3 days. Proof approval adds 1–3 days. International shipping adds 3–10 business days.
What's the difference between a flyer and a leaflet?
The terms are often used interchangeably. Generally, flyers are single-sheet, single-sided or double-sided, used for quick announcements: bold and simple. Leaflets are also single-sheet but may have a single fold (creating 4 panels) and slightly more detailed content. Both are designed for mass distribution at low cost. At ZXC Print, we produce both under the same flyer printing process.
Do I need bleed on my flyer design?
Yes. Bleed is mandatory for any print design that has color, images, or background extending to the edge of the page. The standard bleed is 3–5 mm on all sides. Without bleed, the cutting process may leave a thin white border. If your design has a white border (frame) intentionally, no bleed is needed.
Can you print on recycled or eco-friendly paper?
Yes. We offer recycled paper (100% post-consumer waste, FSC-certified) and eco-friendly uncoated paper options. These papers have a natural, textured feel and are fully recyclable. Note that colors on uncoated recycled paper will appear slightly less vibrant than on coated gloss paper due to ink absorption into the fibers.
What is the minimum order for flyer printing?
Digital flyer printing: minimum 50–100 pieces: no setup cost, ideal for small local promotions or personalized flyers. Offset flyer printing: minimum 500 pieces: the setup cost is amortized over larger runs, making per-unit cost much lower. For test campaigns, start with digital for 500–1,000 flyers, then scale to offset for larger volumes.
