The Complete Guide to PO Bags
Looking for custom PO bag printing? ZXC Print manufactures high-quality polyolefin bags: durable, lightweight plastic bags available as zipper bags, shopping bags, gift bags, and rope handle bags. PO (polyolefin) material offers a balanced combination of tensile strength, printability, and cost-effectiveness. We also produce comparable bag types in PE, PP, OPP, and PVC for applications requiring specific material properties. Free quote and samples available.
What Are PO Bags?
PO bags are plastic bags manufactured from polyolefin: a family of thermoplastic polymers that includes polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). In the packaging industry, "PO bag" typically refers to bags made from a polyolefin blend that balances the soft flexibility of PE with the stiffness of PP, offering a versatile packaging solution for retail, promotional, and general-purpose applications.
At ZXC Print, PO bags are produced through blown film extrusion, followed by bag converting: cutting, sealing, and adding closures such as zipper tracks, rope handles, or adhesive strips. PO film offers moderate clarity, good tensile strength, and reliable heat-seal performance, making it a popular choice for businesses that need a cost-effective alternative to single-material PE or PP bags without sacrificing durability.
PO bags are commonly used for retail merchandise packaging, gift bag sets, promotional giveaway bags, and zipper storage bags where the material needs to hold shape better than PE while remaining more flexible than straight PP.

PO vs PE vs PP vs OPP vs PVC, Material Comparison
The choice of bag material directly affects the bag's appearance, strength, cost, and suitability for different contents. PO occupies a middle ground between PE and PP. Below is a direct comparison of the five plastic film materials available from ZXC Print for bag manufacturing.
| Property | PO (Polyolefin) | PE (Polyethylene) | PP (Polypropylene) | OPP (Oriented PP) | PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flexibility | Moderate: holds shape better than PE, bends without cracking | Soft & flexible | Hard & rigid | Brittle & stiff | Variable: soft or hard formulation |
| Clarity / Transparency | Moderate: slightly hazy, white tint | Low to moderate: translucent | Good: relatively clear | Excellent: clearest of all five | Variable: super-clear to frosted available |
| Tensile Strength | Good: balanced tear resistance | Good: high tear resistance | Low: tears more easily | Low: most prone to tearing | High: strong and durable |
| Puncture Resistance | Moderate | Good | Low | Low | High (multilayer construction) |
| Print Adhesion | Good: requires corona treatment | Good: requires corona treatment | Moderate | Moderate: ink adhesion challenges | Good: accepts most ink systems |
| Heat Sealability | Good | Excellent: seals easily | Moderate: higher temp required | Poor: difficult to seal | Good |
| Cost Level | Low to moderate | Low | Moderate | Moderate | Moderate to high |
| Typical Applications | Shopping bags, gift bags, zipper storage, promotional bags | Flat pockets, garment bags, ziplock food bags, courier envelopes | Crisp packaging, clear bags, food wrappers, garment covers | Flower wrap, bakery bags, candy wrappers, decorative packaging | Heavy-duty retail bags, cosmetic bags, tool pouches, card holders |
Summary: PO offers a balanced combination of moderate clarity, good tensile strength, and reliable printability at a competitive price point. Choose PE for maximum flexibility and tear resistance. Choose PP where a stiffer, clearer material is needed. Choose OPP for applications requiring the highest transparency. Choose PVC for heavy-duty or specialty applications requiring variable softness and high durability.
Common Applications for PO Bags
PO bags serve a wide range of retail and promotional purposes. Their balanced material properties make them a versatile choice across multiple industries.
- Retail & Department Stores, PO rope handle shopping bags for apparel, accessories, and general merchandise. The material holds its shape better than PE, presenting a more polished brand image at checkout.
- Promotional & Trade Shows, PO gift bags and printed totes distributed at events, conferences, and product launches. Full-color flexo printing delivers brand messaging with good color saturation.
- Gift & Specialty Packaging, Decorative PO gift bags with die-cut or ribbon handles for seasonal promotions, corporate gifting, and retail gift-wrapping services.
- Storage & Organization, PO zipper bags for home organization, travel kits, hardware storage, and stationery sets. Reusable zipper closure extends bag life.
- E-Commerce & Mail Order, PO flat pockets and small bags for product inserts, warranty cards, samples, and lightweight merchandise shipping.
Printing Options for PO Bags
PO bags are printed using flexographic printing, the standard method for polyolefin film surfaces. Corona treatment is applied to the film before printing to ensure ink adhesion to the non-porous polyolefin surface.
| Parameter | Options |
|---|---|
| Printing Method | Flexographic (flexo), up to 8 colors. Suitable for block colors, text, logos, and simple illustrations on PO film. |
| Ink Type | Solvent-based or water-based. Solvent inks provide stronger adhesion; water-based inks are lower VOC. Food-grade inks available on request. |
| Color Matching | Pantone Matching System (PMS). Spot colors for brand logo accuracy. CMYK process for full-color artwork. |
| Printing Coverage | Front and/or back face. Side gussets are not printable. Up to 90% ink coverage achievable with full-bleed designs requiring 3 mm bleed. |
| Print Finishes | Matte or gloss lamination (adds sheen and scuff protection). Spot UV for selective gloss accents on logos. |
| Artwork Format | AI, EPS, PDF, CDR. Free die-line templates provided. Minimum 300 DPI, CMYK mode, 3 mm bleed. |
Frequently Asked Questions
What does PO stand for in PO bags?
PO stands for polyolefin, a family of thermoplastic polymers. In the bag manufacturing context, PO refers to a polyolefin blend that offers a balance of flexibility, strength, and clarity: positioned between the softness of PE and the rigidity of PP.
What is the difference between PO and PE bags?
PE (polyethylene) bags are softer, more flexible, and more transparent than PO bags. PE has better tear resistance and is easier to heat-seal. PO bags are stiffer and hold their shape better, making them more suitable for shopping bags and gift bags where a structured appearance matters. PO also accepts printing well with corona treatment.
What is the minimum order quantity for PO bags?
MOQ varies by bag type and size. Standard flat pocket bags start at 1,000 pieces. Rope handle bags and zipper bags typically start at 3,000 pieces. Custom sizes and full-color flexo printing may require 5,000+ pieces. Contact us for exact MOQ pricing on your specific bag design.
Can PO bags be printed with full-color logos?
Yes. PO bags support full-color flexographic printing up to 8 colors. The film requires corona treatment before printing for proper ink adhesion. We recommend vector-based artwork for the best registration accuracy, especially for fine text and detailed logos.
Are PO bags food-safe?
PO (polyolefin) materials are generally recognized as safe for food contact under FDA regulations. We offer food-grade PO bags with appropriate ink formulations. Please specify food-grade requirements when ordering so we can use suitable film and ink materials.
What sizes are available for PO bags?
Custom sizes are available for all PO bag types. Typical widths range from 100 mm to 600 mm, with lengths up to 800 mm. Zipper bags and rope handle bags are available in standard retail sizes or fully custom dimensions. No minimum quantity restrictions for custom sizes on most bag types.
What is the turnaround time?
Standard production takes 5–10 business days from artwork approval for most PO bag orders. Rush service is available for an additional charge. Complex orders with custom handles or special laminations may require 10–14 business days.
