Cylinder Arrangements

Sheetfed presses most commonly utilize a three-cylinder arrangement, but several other configurations are also employed in the industry. The following six cylinder arrangements represent key designs (Figure 3-2):

Two-cylinder: A specialized design integrating the impression and plate cylinder functions into one large cylinder, paired with a standard blanket cylinder.

Three-cylinder: The predominant arrangement, consisting of a plate cylinder, a blanket cylinder, and an impression cylinder.

Four-cylinder: Essentially a three-cylinder design enhanced with the addition of a delivery cylinder.

Perfector (blanket-to-blanket): A versatile configuration enabling two-color printing on one side or single-color printing on both sides of a sheet in a single pass.

Two-color common-impression cylinder: A specialized press design featuring two plate cylinders, each with complete inking and dampening systems, and two blanket cylinders. Both blanket cylinders are accommodated by a single common-impression cylinder.

Two-color common-blanket cylinder: This design incorporates two plate cylinders with complete inking and dampening systems, but utilizes one blanket cylinder and one impression cylinder. Both ink colors from the separate plates transfer to this single blanket.

Exceptions to the standard near right-angle (L-shaped) cylinder arrangement exist. One type of metal decorating press stacks cylinders vertically, allowing rigid metal sheets to pass through the printing nip—the line of contact between blanket and impression cylinders—without bending around an impression cylinder. Another exception uses a single, oversized cylinder serving as both plate and impression cylinder. A further variation employs a single oversized impression cylinder that functions for two separate printing units.

Examples of different press cylinder arrangements

Sustainability and automation remain central drivers, with configurations evolving to support reduced waste and higher productivity in shorter runs. These foundational cylinder arrangements continue to underpin modern press engineering.
