What Are OPP Bags?

OPP bags are plastic bags made from biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film — a polypropylene sheet that has been stretched in both the machine direction and transverse direction during production. This biaxial orientation aligns the polymer molecules in two directions, resulting in a film with exceptional clarity, stiffness, and surface gloss unmatched by PE, PO, or PVC materials.

Unlike PE bags that are heat-sealed on all sides, OPP bags are typically constructed by folding a single sheet of OPP film, sealing the open side with heat or adhesive, and leaving the top open with a self-adhesive closure strip. The self-adhesive seal uses a pressure-sensitive adhesive covered by a protective silicone release liner — simply peel off the liner, fold the tongue over, and press to create a secure, reusable closure.

OPP bags are also available as ziplock-style bags with a similar self-adhesive closure mechanism but with a folded tongue design for easier opening and closing. Both styles offer the signature diamond-clear transparency that makes OPP the preferred material for packaging where product visibility is the top priority.

OPP film offers a unique combination of optical and physical properties that distinguish it from other plastic bag materials.

• Superior Clarity — OPP has the highest transparency of any standard bag film. The biaxial orientation eliminates haze, producing a diamond-clear finish that makes products inside the bag appear as if they are not packaged at all. This is the primary reason OPP is chosen for gift packaging, apparel display, and high-end retail presentation.
• High Surface Gloss — The smooth, glossy surface of OPP film enhances printed colors and creates a premium look. Printed graphics appear sharper and more vibrant than on matte PE films.
• Stiffness & Shape Retention — OPP film is stiffer than PE and PO, giving bags a crisp, structured feel. Bags hold their shape when standing or hanging, which is desirable for retail displays and pegboard merchandising.
• Moisture Barrier — OPP provides an excellent moisture vapor barrier, protecting contents from humidity and condensation. This makes it suitable for food packaging, paper products, and garments that must remain dry during storage and transport.
• Printability — OPP film accepts printing well after surface treatment. Flexographic and rotogravure printing produce sharp, high-contrast results on the glossy surface. The smooth substrate allows fine detail, small text, and intricate logo reproduction.
• Food-Safe — OPP is FDA-approved for direct food contact. It is odorless, tasteless, and does not migrate chemicals into food products.

Limitation: OPP has lower tear and puncture resistance than PE and PVC. The biaxial orientation makes the film prone to tearing from a nick or cut. This is a trade-off for its superior optical clarity — bags should be handled with care and are best suited for products that do not have sharp edges or corners.
