What Are PP Bags?
PP (polypropylene) bags are plastic bags made from polypropylene film — a thermoplastic polymer produced by polymerizing propylene gas. Unlike OPP (oriented polypropylene) film that is stretched in two directions for maximum clarity, the PP bags produced by ZXC Print are made from CPP (cast polypropylene) film, which is extruded and cooled without orientation, resulting in a softer, more flexible material with superior heat-seal properties.
At ZXC Print, PP bags are manufactured through a controlled process: virgin polypropylene resin is extruded through a flat die onto a chill roll to form CPP film, which is then surface-treated for print adhesion (corona treatment), flexographically printed, slit to bag width, and heat-sealed into finished bag form. The CPP film can be produced with slip additives for easy opening and anti-static properties for electronics packaging.
PP bags are distinct from PE (polyethylene) and OPP (oriented polypropylene) bags in several ways. Compared to PE, PP bags offer higher clarity, a stiffer feel, and better heat resistance (hot-fill up to 100°C). Compared to OPP, PP bags are softer, more flexible, easier to heat-seal, and have better tear resistance. PP sits between PE and OPP in terms of clarity and stiffness — offering a balanced combination of transparency, flexibility, and sealability that makes it a versatile choice for general packaging applications.

PP vs OPP vs PE — Key Differences

Polypropylene Material Properties
Polypropylene offers a valuable combination of properties that make it suitable for a wide range of packaging applications.
- Non-Toxic & Odorless — PP is FDA-approved for direct food contact. It is inert, tasteless, and does not impart any odor or flavor to packaged products. PP is one of the safest plastics for food packaging.
- Chemical Resistance — PP resists most acids, alkalis, and organic solvents at room temperature. It has better chemical resistance than PE, particularly against organic solvents and oils.
- Moisture Barrier — PP provides an excellent moisture vapor barrier (MVTR ~0.5–1.5 g/100 in²/day at 38°C/90% RH), comparable to HDPE and better than LDPE. This makes it suitable for dry product packaging where moisture protection is important.
- Surface Printability — After corona treatment (38–42 dynes/cm), PP film accepts flexographic and rotogravure printing with good ink adhesion. The smooth surface produces sharp, clean print results.
- Light Weight — PP has a density of 0.90–0.91 g/cm³, making it the lightest of common packaging plastics (PE: 0.92–0.96, PET: 1.38). This translates to lower shipping weight and material cost per bag.
- Recyclability — PP is widely recyclable. It is classified as resin identification code #5 (PP) and is accepted by most municipal recycling programs that accept plastic film.
Processing advantages: CPP film can be produced with custom surface finishes (glossy, matte, or textured). Slip additives can be incorporated to reduce surface friction for easy bag opening. Anti-static masterbatch can be added for electronics-grade ESD protection.
