What Are Bubble Bags?
Bubble bags are protective packaging pouches made from LDPE (low-density polyethylene) bubble film — the same material as conventional bubble wrap, but pre-formed into bag shapes with sealed edges for ready-to-use cushion packaging. Unlike flat bubble wrap sheets that must be manually cut, folded, and taped around products, bubble bags are pre-sized pouches that can be loaded, sealed, and shipped in a single motion.
At ZXC Print, bubble bags are manufactured through a complete in-house process: LDPE resin extrusion and film blowing with controlled bubble formation, annealing for bubble stability, film slitting, bag cutting, and heat sealing. The bubble film is produced by passing molten LDPE through a patterned chill roll that creates hemispherical air pockets, which are then sealed by a second layer of flat or bubble film to trap air permanently within each cell.
Bubble bags provide a unique combination of cushioning, light weight, and moisture protection that distinguishes them from foam-lined mailers, corrugated box inserts, and paper cushioning. The trapped air cells act as individual shock absorbers, distributing impact forces across the bag surface and preventing damage to fragile contents during transport and handling.

Bubble Film Structure & Physical Properties
The performance of a bubble bag depends on the bubble geometry, film thickness, and the number of film layers. Understanding these parameters helps select the right bag for specific product weight and fragility.
| Parameter | Options | Effect on Cushioning |
|---|---|---|
| Bubble Diameter | 6 mm (small), 10 mm (medium), 25 mm (large), 30 mm (jumbo) | Small bubbles (6 mm) provide dense, even cushioning for lightweight items. Large bubbles (25–30 mm) absorb higher impact forces for heavier products. Medium bubbles (10 mm) offer the best general-purpose balance. |
| Bubble Height | 3–10 mm depending on bubble diameter | Taller bubbles provide more air volume per cell, increasing shock absorption height. Shorter bubbles offer tighter packing and more cells per square inch for even load distribution. |
| Film Thickness | 30–120 microns (LDPE film per layer) | Thicker film produces stiffer, more durable bubbles that resist popping under pressure. Thinner film produces softer, more conformable bags that wrap tightly around irregular shapes. |
| Layer Construction | Single-layer (one bubble + one flat film) or double-layer (two bubble films back-to-back) | Single-layer: lighter, more flexible, suitable for lightweight products (up to 2–3 kg). Double-layer: double the cushioning, higher impact resistance, suitable for heavier items (up to 10–15 kg). |
| Liner Type | None (naked bubble), kraft paper, pearl film, aluminum foil, transparent film | The outer liner determines surface friction, tear resistance, printability, and barrier properties. Kraft paper adds a natural look and tear resistance. Pearl film adds waterproofing and a premium matte finish. |
Cushioning efficiency: Bubble film achieves a cushioning efficiency of 35–55% depending on bubble geometry and loading conditions. This is measured by dynamic cushioning curves per ASTM D1596, which plot peak acceleration against static load. We provide cushioning performance data for each bubble specification on request.
Bubble Bag Types by Structure
Bubble bags are classified by the number of bubble layers and the type of outer liner material. Each structure serves different protection, appearance, and branding requirements.
| Bag Type | Construction | Protection Level | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Naked Bubble Bags (Single-Sided) | One layer of bubble film sealed to a flat LDPE backing film. Bubbles face inward toward the product. | Light to moderate. Ideal for products up to 2–3 kg. Most economical bubble bag format. | E-commerce poly mailers, document pouches, lightweight electronics, cosmetics packaging. Lowest unit cost. |
| Double-Sided Bubble Bags | Two layers of bubble film sealed back-to-back with bubbles on both inner surfaces. Maximum air cushion per unit thickness. | High. Bubbles on both sides double the air cushion volume. Suitable for products up to 10–15 kg. | Heavy electronics, automotive parts, power tools, glassware, ceramic items. Maximum shock absorption. |
| Kraft Paper Bubble Mailers | Bubble film laminated to a kraft paper outer layer (80–150 gsm). Paper on the outside, bubbles on the inside. Self-seal adhesive strip closure. | Moderate to high. Kraft paper adds puncture resistance and a premium outer appearance. Bubble inner layer provides cushioning. | E-commerce shipping, branded mail-order packaging, books and media, gifts, apparel. Most popular bubble mailer format for courier shipping. |
| Pearl Film Bubble Bags | Bubble film laminated to a white pearlized BOPP or EPE foam outer layer. Soft matte finish with waterproof surface. | Moderate to high. Pearl film adds water resistance and a soft-touch surface. Good for products requiring water protection and a premium unboxing experience. | Cosmetics, skincare, premium electronics, jewelry, luxury goods. Waterproof and aesthetically upscale. |
| Metallized / Aluminized Bubble Bags | Bubble film laminated to a metallized PET or aluminum foil outer layer. Reflective metallic surface provides both cushioning and barrier protection. | High. Metallized layer adds moisture barrier, light barrier, and heat reflection. Bubble layer provides cushioning. | Photographic equipment, optical components, temperature-sensitive chemicals, printed circuit boards. Combines cushioning with environmental protection. |
| Transparent Bubble Bags (2-Layer or 3-Layer) | Clear bubble film with a transparent flat outer film. 2-layer: one bubble + one flat. 3-layer: bubble between two flat films for extra strength. | Light to moderate for 2-layer; moderate to high for 3-layer. Product is visible through the bag for easy identification. | Retail display packaging, warehouse organization, multi-pick fulfillment centers. Products remain visible without opening the bag. |
Custom combinations: Any combination of bubble diameter, film thickness, and outer liner can be produced to match specific product fragility, weight, and branding requirements.
Functional Types by Electrostatic & Barrier Properties
Beyond structural types, bubble bags are also classified by their electrostatic and barrier properties — critical for electronics, aerospace, and pharmaceutical applications.
| Type | Surface Resistance | Key Property | Standards & Best For |

Key Advantages of Custom Bubble Bags
- Superior Impact Protection — Trapped air cells absorb and distribute shock across the bag surface, reducing peak G-force at the product by 50–70% compared to foam padding of equivalent thickness. Dynamic cushioning curves available for each bubble specification.
- Light Weight — A typical bubble bag weighs 60–80% less than a foam-lined corrugated box for the same product volume. This reduces dimensional-weight shipping costs significantly, especially for air freight.
- Space Efficiency — Bubble bags ship flat and are stored flat, occupying minimal warehouse space. A carton of 500 flat bubble bags occupies the same shelf space as approximately 20 pre-assembled corrugated boxes.
- Integrated Cushioning & Envelope — Unlike bubble wrap (which requires wrapping + taping + an outer box/poly bag), bubble bags serve as both cushioning and outer packaging in one unit. This reduces packaging labor time by 50–70% in fulfillment operations.
- Moisture & Dust Protection — The sealed LDPE film construction provides a waterproof and dust-proof barrier. Metallized and pearl film options add additional moisture and light barrier for sensitive products.
- ESD Protection Options — Anti-static and static-dissipative grades provide ESD protection that meets ANSI/ESD S20.20 and MIL-PRF-81705E standards. Pink bubble bags provide static-safe storage; black static-dissipative bags provide Faraday cage protection.
- Custom Branding — Flexographic printing on the outer surface turns each bubble bag into a branded shipping package. Kraft paper mailers with custom printing are a cost-effective alternative to custom-branded corrugated boxes.
