What Is Paper Bag Printing?

Paper bag printing is the custom production of paper carrier bags — printed with logos, brand graphics, product information, or full-color artwork. Unlike generic stock bags, custom-printed paper bags serve as mobile billboards for your brand, carrying your identity into the hands of every customer who walks out of your store or receives a delivery from your business.

At ZXC Print, paper bag printing encompasses a wide range of constructions: flat and gusseted shopping bags, SOS (self-opening style) grocery bags, wine bottle carriers, gift bags, and die-cut handle bags. We produce them on Heidelberg offset presses for consistent color and sharp registration across the entire run. All post-press processes — die-cutting, scoring, folding, gluing, and handle attachment — are performed in-house for faster turnaround and tighter quality control.

Paper bags can be printed on the front only (single-sided) or on both sides, with optional lamination applied to the printed side for gloss or matte protection. Handle materials include cotton rope, nylon ribbon, and twisted paper cord. Decorative finishes such as spot UV, hot foil stamping, and embossing are available for premium branding applications.

Paper Bag Types & Styles

Paper bags are available in several standard constructions, each designed for a specific use case. The structural differences affect printing area, load capacity, cost, and appearance.

• Flat Paper Bags — Simple rectangular bags with a folded bottom gusset. The sides are flat (no side gussets), making them ideal for documents, flat merchandise, and lightweight takeaway items. Maximum printable area is the full front face. Available in both glued-seam and stitched-seam constructions.
• SOS (Self-Opening Style) Bags — Square-bottom bags with side gussets that open into a rectangular box shape automatically when shaken open. The classic grocery bag design. Excellent for bulk items, loose products, and high-volume retail. Available in white or brown kraft paper from 80 to 200 gsm.
• Shopping Bags (Gusseted) — Full-side-gusseted bags with reinforced bottom boards (chipboard insert). The most popular retail bag format. Available with cotton rope, nylon ribbon, or die-cut handles. Typically printed on 210–300 gsm C1S art board with gloss or matte lamination on the printed side.
• Wine / Bottle Bags — Tall, narrow bags designed to carry one or two bottles, with internal dividers available for secure separation. Often produced in kraft or art paper with twisted handles and hot foil branding.
• Gift Bags — Decorative bags with a premium finish. Printed on 250–300 gsm art paper or C1S art board with lamination, spot UV, and hot foil stamping. Silk ribbon handles and gift tag loops are common options.
• Kraft Paper Bags — Made from natural brown or bleached white kraft paper. Known for high tear resistance, rustic appearance, and eco-friendly perception. Popular for e-commerce packaging, organic brands, and boutique retail. Available in 80–200 gsm.
• Art Paper Bags — Coated paper bags with smooth, printable surfaces that deliver excellent color vibrancy and photo-realistic image reproduction. Suitable for luxury perfumery, cosmetics, and high-end retail. Available in 150–250 gsm.
• Window Bags — Die-cut opening covered by transparent film, revealing the product inside. Common for bakery packaging and promotional gifts. Custom die costs may apply.
• Die-Cut Handle Bags — Reinforced cut-out handle formed from the bag material — no rope or ribbon. Handle area is reinforced with an extra paper layer or folded top edge. Cost-effective for large volumes and fully recyclable (single-material).
• Twisted Handle Bags — SOS-style bags with twisted paper cord handles anchored through reinforced holes or folded seams. Common for takeaway food. All-paper construction, fully recyclable.

Standard Sizes & Dimensions

Paper bag dimensions are specified as Width × Depth × Height (W × D × H). The width is the bag opening (across the front), depth is the side gusset (bottom square dimension), and height is from bottom fold to top edge. Below are common standard sizes and their typical applications.

Paper Stock Options

The paper grade determines the bag's structural strength, surface quality for printing, and overall tactile impression. ZXC Print stocks three primary paper categories suitable for paper bag production.

Reinforcement: Bags with a bottom board (chipboard insert) provide additional support for heavy contents. The insert is glued inside the bottom fold and is typically made from 600–1000 gsm recycled board.

Handle Types & Attachment

The handle is both a functional and aesthetic element of a paper bag. Different handle materials and attachment methods affect load capacity, cost, and the overall brand impression.

Handle placement: Standard handles are centered at the top of the bag. Custom positioning is available. Die-cut handles benefit from reinforcement with a folded paper strip or chipboard insert to prevent tearing under load.

Printing Options & Coverage Guide

ZC Print offers offset printing for paper bags on Heidelberg presses. The printing method, color count, and coverage area depend on the bag design and budget. Full-bleed printing requires 3 mm bleed on all edges.

Note on printable area: The printing area is limited to the front face (and optionally the back face) of the bag. The side gussets, bottom fold, and handle area cannot receive print. For C1S art board, the coated side is the printable surface; the reverse is uncoated and produces flatter colors with lower contrast. Lamination is applied to the printed side only (single-side lamination).

File preparation: Supply print-ready PDF with 3 mm bleed, CMYK color mode, 300 DPI minimum resolution. Include a dedicated die-line layer showing the bag outline, fold lines, gusset zones, and handle hole positions. We provide paper bag printing templates free of charge.

Decorative Finishes

Add a premium touch to your paper bags with decorative finishing options. These are especially popular for luxury retail, cosmetic brand bags, and corporate gift bags.

Lamination note: Lamination is applied to the printed side only (single-sided). It adds water resistance, tear strength, and a professional finish. Matte lamination is recommended as a base for spot UV — the contrast between the matte background and glossy raised UV creates a striking tactile effect.
