What Is Catalog Printing?
Catalog printing is the production of multi-page printed publications that showcase a company's products, services, or collections. Unlike books, catalogs are typically full-color throughout, use coated paper for sharp product photography, and are bound to allow easy browsing — either saddle-stitched (thin catalogs) or perfect bound (thick catalogs).
Catalogs serve as powerful sales tools in B2B and B2C markets. A well-printed catalog can drive sales by putting your products directly into the hands of decision-makers. From furniture and fashion to industrial equipment and consumer goods, catalogs remain one of the most effective marketing investments — especially when paired with professional printing on quality stock.
ZXC Print produces catalogs in runs from 100 to 100,000+ copies, using Heidelberg offset presses for consistent color across the entire print run. We offer saddle stitching for thin catalogs (up to 80 pages), perfect binding for thicker publications, and a full range of finishing options including spot UV, foil stamping, and lamination.
Related services: book printing, booklet printing, magazine printing.

How Catalogs Are Printed: 6-Step Process
Catalog printing follows a similar process to book printing, with specific adjustments for the high volume of full-color pages and the need for consistent product photography reproduction.
Prepress & Imposition
PDF files are checked for bleed (3 mm), resolution (300 DPI), CMYK color mode, and font embedding. Pages are imposed into printer spreads — 4-page or 8-page on a single sheet for saddle stitching, 16-page signatures for perfect bound.
Plate Making & Proofing
For offset runs, CMYK plates are created from imposed files. A color-accurate proof is printed for approval — critical for catalogs where product colors must match the actual merchandise.
Offset Printing
Heidelberg presses print on coated art paper for maximum color vibrancy. Color bars allow QC to monitor density, dot gain, and registration throughout the run. Drying between passes prevents ink set-off.
Folding & Gathering
Printed sheets are folded into signatures. For saddle-stitched catalogs, the folded sections are collated and stapled through the center fold. For perfect bound, signatures are gathered and spine-milled for glue penetration.
Binding & Trimming
Saddle-stitched catalogs are stapled along the spine fold, then face-trimmed on three sides. Perfect bound catalogs have the spine glued with PUR or hotmelt, then trimmed. Wire-O or comb binding uses punched holes and mechanical insertion.
Finishing & Packing
Lamination, spot UV, or foil stamping on the cover. Catalogs are inspected, shrink-wrapped in stacks, and packed in sturdy cartons for shipping. Drop shipping to multiple locations is available.
Catalog Binding Types Compared
Choosing the right binding for your catalog balances page count, durability, lay-flat ability, and budget. Here are the most common options for catalogs.
| Binding Type | Max Pages | Lay Flat | Durability | Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saddle Stitching | ~80 pages | Full | ★★☆☆☆ | $ | Thin catalogs, seasonal flyers, event programs, lookbooks |
| Perfect Binding | ~200 pages | No | ★★★☆☆ | $$ | Thick product catalogs, corporate lookbooks, annual reports |
| Wire-O / Spiral | ~200 pages | 360° | ★★★☆☆ | $$ | Desk reference catalogs, price lists, technical spec books |
| Plastic Comb | ~150 pages | 360° | ★★☆☆☆ | $ | Internal documents, training catalogs, budget-friendly bound sheets |
| Case Bound (Hardcover) | Unlimited | Partial | ★★★★☆ | $$$ | Premium brand catalogs, commemorative lookbooks, luxury collections |
Paper Selection for Catalogs
The paper stock you choose defines how your product images look and how the catalog feels in the hand. Coated papers are the standard choice for catalog printing due to their superior color reproduction.
| Paper Type | Weight | Finish | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gloss Art Paper | 80–200 gsm | High gloss, reflective | Product catalogs with vibrant photography — makes colors pop |
| Matt / Silk Art Paper | 100–200 gsm | Non-glare, satin sheen | Premium lookbooks, luxury brand catalogs, corporate reports |
| Offset (Woodfree) | 80–120 gsm | Matte, uncoated | Text-heavy catalogs, mail-order catalogs (lighter weight = lower postage) |
| Recycled | 80–120 gsm | Textured matte | Eco-conscious brands, sustainability reports, green marketing |

What Determines Catalog Printing Cost
1. Quantity
Unit price drops 50–60% from 500 to 5,000 copies. Offset plates become cost-effective at ~1,000 copies for catalogs.
2. Page Count
Saddle-stitched catalogs increase in 4-page increments. Perfect bound catalogs use 16-page signatures. Even page counts are more efficient.
3. Paper Weight
80→157 gsm adds ~$0.15–0.40/catalog. Offset is cheaper than coated. Gloss and matt art are similar in price.
4. Color
Full CMYK on both sides (4/4) is standard. Spot color (2/2) saves 20–30% but rarely used for product catalogs.
5. Binding & Covers
Saddle stitch is cheapest. Perfect bound adds ~20–30%. Hardcover adds 2–4×. Lamination adds minimal cost but protects the cover.
