Packaging Gravure Presses
Gravure presses for packaging and product applications are categorized into two primary groups based on substrate weight: light weight and heavy weight. Light weight substrates typically include flexible packaging, gift wraps, paper and foil labels, and decorative films. Heavy weight substrates encompass folding cartons, floor coverings, vinyl sheet shower curtains, place mats, and outdoor furniture. Substrate weight ranges overlap in the mid-range, allowing a single press to handle a diverse array of products and materials.
These presses frequently integrate in-line finishing operations to streamline production. Common processes include:

Primary applications for gravure package printing are folding cartons, flexible packaging, labels, and wraps. Each application imposes specific demands on the gravure press and requires distinct in-line finishing capabilities.
Figure 4-3 illustrates a five-color gravure press designed for wallcovering, decorative laminates, and floor covering, printing on an eight-foot-wide web.
