Multicolor Press

A multicolor press is a sophisticated printing system that integrates multiple individual printing units, each with its own inking and dampening system. Combined with a feeder, sheet transfer system, and delivery mechanism, this configuration enables the application of two or more colors in a single pass through the printing press. Available with two, four, five, six, or even more units, these presses rely on precise wet trapping—the ability of a freshly printed, wet ink film to properly accept subsequent wet ink films—to achieve high-quality output.

In larger press sizes, printing units are nearly identical and arranged in a tandem configuration. Certain two- and four-color press designs feature one unit positioned higher than the other to improve operator accessibility.

One method of constructing a multicolor press involves placing open-unit type single-color sheetfed presses in tandem, with each unit printing a different color. Transfer cylinders are positioned between these units to transport the sheet sequentially. The number of these cylinders varies; some presses use three between units, while others employ a single, double-size transfer cylinder. An odd number of transfer cylinders is a necessary design feature to ensure the side of the sheet to be printed faces away from the impression cylinder.

Another design for multicolor sheetfed presses is the "semiopen design." This configuration utilizes a single, common impression cylinder that serves two pairs of plate and blanket cylinders. The sheet is held by this shared impression cylinder and is successively brought into contact with each blanket. A press built with two such semiopen units is capable of printing four colors on one side of the sheet in a single pass.

Looking ahead to 2026, multicolor press technology continues to evolve within the broader printing industry. These systems are increasingly integrated with automated workflows and data-driven controls to enhance efficiency and color consistency. The focus on sustainability also encourages the use of presses optimized for rapid job changeovers and compatibility with environmentally conscious inks and substrates.
