Inking Systems for Waterless Lithography

Inking Systems for Waterless Lithography

Waterless lithography requires a printing press equipped with a specialized temperature control system. Two primary methods are used: an ink oscillator cooling system and a plate cylinder cooling system. The ink oscillator system modifies a standard inking unit with hollow vibrator rollers that circulate a chilled or heated water solution. This allows the operator to maintain ink temperature within a precise range of just a few degrees.

These water-cooled oscillators are classified as either single-ended or double-ended. Single-ended oscillators have water inflow and outflow at the same end of the roller, while double-ended oscillators feature inflow at one end and outflow at the other. The double-ended design offers superior cooling uniformity across the entire roller width.

Each waterless ink formulation often performs optimally at a slightly different temperature. For example, black ink may achieve best results at 72~74°F (22.2~23.3°C), while cyan ink operates best at 68~70°F (20~21.1°C). Each inking system therefore features independent temperature control via a zone control unit that blends hot and cold water to the precise temperature required for the specific ink. Infrared sensors monitor each printing unit's temperature, providing immediate feedback to ensure consistent thermal maintenance.

Looking toward 2026, waterless lithography maintains relevance through its inherent reduction in water consumption and waste. The technology increasingly integrates with automated press systems and data-driven process controls, aligning with industry movements toward sustainable manufacturing and enhanced operational precision.
