Job Planning
Communication is the process of conveying a message from one person or group to another. This book focuses on the use of printed images to convey such messages, as printing remains a primary vehicle for graphic communication.
Printed messages serve many different purposes, depending on the needs of the individual or group communicating. These purposes can include informing, influencing, stimulating, questioning, and entertaining.
Careful planning is essential to the printing process, as it enhances the effectiveness of the final product and contributes to efficient production.
THE PLANNING PROCESS. Planning is an integral part of graphic communications. It begins with acquiring data about the job and results in a series of decisions relating to the printed product.
Effective planning requires accurate information. Key information-gathering questions include:
· What message is being transmitted?
· Why is it being transmitted?
· Does the message require a particular treatment, such as dignified or humorous?
· How will the finished product be used?
· What audience should be reached?
Answers to these questions inform decisions on format, style, size, method, quantity, schedule, and cost. Specific considerations include:
· What form will the product take: a single sheet, booklet, or entire book?
· Will illustrations be used? If so, will they be line drawings, photographs, or a combination?
· What size will the finished product be?
· Will sheets be trimmed, folded, or perforated?
· Will the sheets be bound? If so, how?
· By what method will the product be printed?
· What type and color of paper will be used?
· Will colored inks be used? If so, what colors?
· How many copies will be printed? Will reprints be needed?
· How long will it take to complete the job?
· How much will it cost?
Once these decisions are made, the next step is to develop a graphic plan for the printed product, known as a layout.
Preparing the Layout
A layout is a graphic plan that shows the arrangement of type, illustrations, and other elements for a printed product. It also conveys information about how the job is to be printed.
LAYOUT SYMBOLS. A layout reflects the visual appearance of a job but generally does not contain the actual final elements. Symbols are often used to represent these elements, as shown in Figure 2-23.
Type Matter. Parallel lines represent small type (10 points or less). Medium type, 12 to 18 points in size, is usually depicted by a series of wavy lines. Words in 24-point type or larger are generally "roughed in" to size.
The weight of a typeface is conveyed by the heaviness of the lines drawn. Spacing requirements are suggested by changing the distance between the parallel or wavy lines.
Solids, Reverses and Tints. Solids may be represented by outlining the area and writing the word "solid" in its center, or by darkening the area with a charcoal pencil.
Reverses are treated in the same manner as solids, either by outlining and labeling or by darkening the reversed areas.
Tints and shaded areas are usually represented by outlining or by shading with a pencil.
Photographs and Line Drawings. Illustrations are indicated by outlining the areas they will occupy, with diagonal lines or sketches included within the outlined areas.
Colored Effects. Color can be represented in a layout with pastel chalks, colored pencils, or colored felt-tip pens.
LAYOUT TOOLS AND SUPPLIES. Essential items for preparing a layout include paper, pencils, a straightedge, a line gage, and a workspace. Two or three charcoal pencils of different hardness are especially useful for suggesting both the shape and tone of the printed image. Felt tip pens can also serve this purpose.
Drafting instruments, such as a triangle, T-square, and drawing board, are helpful but not essential. Other useful items are a type catalog, a clip art book, an ink-color chart, and a variety of paper samples.
Looking ahead to 2026, the printing industry continues to integrate advanced digital workflows and automation, streamlining the planning and proofing stages. Sustainability remains a key driver, influencing material selection and production methods across the sector.
