a. The new trend of development in prepress industry

Conventional plate production, characterized by imagesetters, film, and PS plates, has lost its leading position in the prepress industry. Currently, sales turnover for computer-to-plate machines and related products like CopyDot film scanners is experiencing tremendous growth.

CTP technology significantly improves plate production efficiency, drastically shortening the entire printing production cycle and enhancing print quality. Both prepress and printing industries prioritize CTP development. According to American GATF rating statistics, CTP was rated as the number one advanced printing technology for four consecutive years starting in 1997. Internationally renowned prepress suppliers and plate manufacturers, including Purup-Eskofot, Agfa, Dai Nippon Screen, Scitex, Heidelberg, Kodak, Fuji, and ECRM, have all developed full lines of CTP products.

The widespread acceptance of CTP technology has caused the market for traditional plate-making equipment and consumable materials to shrink considerably. Throughput for imagesetters, film processors, plate processors, and plate exposure systems has slowed or halted production. Some experts predicted that laser imagesetters would gradually stop production by 2005, and that film production technique would no longer exist by 2010.

At Drupa 2000, held in Germany in May 2000, more than 90 CTP system and consumable material manufacturers displayed nearly 100 products. This event showcased significant changes and the gradual maturation of CTP technology, advancing worldwide prepress technology and forming its basic structure.

Historically, every revolution in prepress technology has spurred major development in the printing industry. Advances in printing are interdependent with improvements in prepress. For the next decade, printing industry development will depend on the prepress industry, with the focal point being the improvement and popularization of Computer-to-Plate technology.

CTP and digital printing have been central to the developing system, enabling a total digital workflow and greatly improving efficiency.

Digital technology has largely replaced traditional methods. Designs and pictures are now transferred via network or electronic media. A product can be designed in one part of the world and printed in another.

b. The obstacle of the Computer-to-Plate technology's popularization and the opportunity of the technical development

While acknowledging the constant development of CTP technology, one must also recognize its difficulties and problems. These include CTP sub-technologies, the operational habits of printing enterprises, staffquality (staff quality), daily consumable materials, and chemicals. The key obstacle to CTP popularization is the cost of consumables, which are double that of common materials. Many newspapers and printing factories consider long-term costs and are therefore not vigorous in adopting CTP.

Some have suggested that printing and prepress technology development might culminate in the elimination of the prepress concept altogether, achieving direct printing from computer to press. This trend may become apparent in ten or twenty years.

The development course and speed of printing technology consistently exceed expectations. It fulfills needs, sparks imagination, presents challenges, and provides opportunities to realize ambitions. In this new age, the opportunities accompanying printing technology development are collectively anticipated and welcomed.
