What is Bleed and what bleeds do in the printing process
In the printing industry, bleed is a fundamental prepress technique. It refers to any image or graphic element that extends beyond the final trim edge of a printed sheet. This involves intentionally extending the design an additional 1/8" (.125") past the page boundary. During the finishing process, this excess area is trimmed off, guaranteeing a clean edge on the final product with no unprinted white borders.
A safety margin is equally critical to protect essential content from being accidentally cut. All text or images not intended for trimming must remain at least 1/8" to 1/4" (.125" to .25") from the layout edge. Elements placed closer than 1/8" risk being trimmed off, resulting in inconsistent margins.
The following diagram illustrates this concept. The blue area represents the bleed, extending .125" beyond the trim edge, which is marked by the red line. The document size typically matches the final trim size.
Bleed is mandatory for any artwork where an image reaches the border. Designers must add a quarter inch (0.125") to each dimension. For example, a 4" × 6" postcard requiring full bleed should have an image size of 4.25" × 6.25", represented by the red box.
The cutting process trims 0.125" (1/8") from each edge, yielding the final 4" × 6" postcard (black box). To ensure text remains intact, it must be positioned at least 0.125" (1/8") inside the trim line on all sides (blue box).
