Binding Printed Materials
Printed sheets are assembled using various binding techniques, each suited to specific applications and durability requirements. The most common methods include saddle-wire, side-wire, sewn soft-cover, sewn case-bound, adhesive, mechanical, and loose-leaf binding.
Saddle-Wire Binding
Saddle-wire binding uses wire staples to fasten pages assembled and folded at the back. A cover may or may not be included. This method is ideal for thin booklets and magazines, and materials bound this way lie flat when open.

Side-Wire Binding
Side-wire binding is suitable for thicker booklets and magazines. Wire staples pass through one edge of the assembled page pile. Unlike saddle-wire binding, materials bound this way do not lie flat and must be held open.

Sewn Soft-Cover Binding
Sewn soft-cover binding uses binding thread as the fastening device. The thread is sewn through holes punched in the center fold of a signature or through one edge of an assembled page pile. This technique can join several signatures together.

Sewn Case-Bound Books
Sewn case-bound books withstand hard use. Individual signatures are first sewn together with binding thread, then encased between hard covers made from binder's board and cloth or other durable material.

Adhesive Binding
Adhesive binding uses an adhesive or padding compound to hold assembled sheets together. Common applications include notepads, telephone books, and pocketbooks.

Mechanical (Spiral) Binding
Plastic combs or wire fasten individual sheets by inserting them through holes punched along one edge of the paper pile. A specialized machine performs both punching and comb insertion.


Loose-Leaf Binding
Loose-leaf binding methods permit the addition or removal of pages. Post binders and ring binders are commonly used for this purpose.
