Every web-fed gravure press begins with an unwinder, a component that feeds a roll of substrate while maintaining precise web tension.
The printing unit, shown in figure 4-1, forms the core of the gravure press. It consists of the following essential components, regardless of application:
The image carrier is a cylinder engraved with the image to be printed.
An ink fountain, a large well positioned beneath the cylinder, extends the full width of the press unit.
A doctor blade assembly includes a blade that wipes excess ink from non-image areas of the cylinder.
An impression roller is a rubber-covered metal cylinder that holds the substrate against the engraved cylinder to ensure proper ink transfer.
A dryer provides a controlled source of heated air, regulated for optimum drying of inks or coatings and removal of ink carrier vapors.
The limited number of major components and their physical simplicity make gravure printing easy to automate, simple to operate, and readily adaptable for additional in-line converting operations.
Modern gravure presses incorporate multiple levels of automation, including programmable control of all press sequences and digital drives. Common automated features include:
Fault detection, including on-line video monitoring.
Preset of job variables.
Production statistics.
Ink consumption data analysis.
Paper consumption data analysis.
Waste analysis.
Many recently delivered presses have replaced conventional main consoles with computerized controls. Video displays allow operators to manage press functions through touch screens or keyboards.
Increased automation and data integration streamline production workflows, while a focus on sustainable practices influences material and energy usage. These developments aim to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact across high-volume print applications.
