Reverse UV, Matte UV and Matte Embossing: Three Grain Finishes Compared

Reverse UV, matte UV and matte embossing all put a fine grain on a printed surface. Each one gives packaging a soft, substantial touch that reads as considered rather than slick. Where they differ is in how the grain is made, what it feels like under a finger, and how well it survives handling. The three are easy to confuse in a sample book, and just as easy to tell apart once you know what to look for.

How reverse UV works

Reverse UV relies on the way two coatings push each other away. A base UV varnish is printed first, only in the areas that should end up dull. A glossy UV varnish is then applied across the whole sheet. Where there is no base layer, the gloss cures bright and reflective. Where the base layer sits, the two coatings repel each other and that area cures matte, with a slight shrink that leaves a fine crinkle. Because the crinkle follows the printed base varnish, the texture can be tuned by the amount of varnish used or by the dot size, which changes how strong the contrast between bright and dull becomes.

How matte UV printing works

Matte UV printing is also called UV imitation etching, and it starts with a metallic substrate such as gold or silver card. A semi transparent ink is printed in a raised, uneven layer over the mirror surface. Cured under ultraviolet light, that ink scatters the reflection and produces the look of a metal surface that has been etched or sanded. On film stock the treatment is applied to polyester or other films to give the printed piece a softer, more formal feel. A scratch resistant additive blended into the ink improves the durability of the finished surface.

How matte embossing works

Embossing is a mechanical process rather than a coating one. A matched male and female die presses into the sheet under controlled pressure, and the paper deforms permanently. The result is a raised pattern with real depth, catching light on one edge and casting a small shadow on the other. On heavier stocks the relief can be pronounced, and it survives handling far better than any surface coat.

Strengths of reverse UV

Reverse UV adds to the ink as well as to the surface. It improves light resistance and helps the print stand up to heat and moisture, which protects the image underneath and reduces the need for a separate lamination pass. The same sheet can carry a mirror bright area and a matte or grain area side by side, and the difference in brightness is stronger than a single gloss or single matte finish can produce. The dull areas are printed by offset, so registration stays tight and the bright areas keep their dot sharpness. Gift boxes, calendars, wine and spirits cartons, cigarette packs and food cartons are common uses.

What reverse UV asks of the paper and the press

Smoothness matters most. A rough or low grade sheet drinks the varnish and the gloss never develops, so the contrast falls flat. When a job is printed with ordinary ink, it is better to leave the spray powder off a linked coating unit, or to apply a water based varnish offline; too much powder kills the difference between mirror and grain. The ink must be fully dry before coating, or the varnish will not cure properly. Artwork needs its own selection pass, with the grain areas filled as a solid base and the bright areas left open, then output as a separate film and plate. Highly absorbent stocks should be avoided, and the sheet needs a clean, well coated surface, since poor coverage shows through as mottling. UV curing agent should be kept low, no more than one percent, or it works against the effect. Moisture content should sit in the middle of the range, because a damp sheet curls and a bone dry one cracks.

Strengths of matte UV printing

The grain is finer than conventional matte work because it comes off a printing press, so it repeats from sheet to sheet with the precision of the machine. Production is fast, since the matte effect forms together with the colors in a single pass and the sheet is finished when it leaves the press. Cost is lower than older matte methods for the same reason, and no lamination is required. The coating also shields the ink and the paper beneath it.

Strengths of matte embossing

Embossing carries the pattern into the sheet itself, so the surface shows images and textures at different depths with an obvious three dimensional relief. It suits high end tobacco, spirits, food, medicine and cosmetics packaging, as well as posters, calendars and decorative printed pieces.

Telling the three apart

A blade is the quick test. Reverse UV has a bright, slightly oily surface that a blade will scrape away, and it comes from a UV coating unit. Matte UV looks whitish, feels grainy, and also scrapes off, because it is a screen printed UV ink. Matte embossing looks dull, feels grainy, and cannot be scraped off, because the shape is pressed into the paper itself. Put simply, reverse UV is the coating that plays light against itself, matte UV is the etched metallic look, and matte embossing is the one you can feel as relief.
