Flexography has been a long-standing method for folding carton production, but the adoption of advanced central impression presses for this application has accelerated considerably in the last ten years. Early uses, like pizza cartons, were historically dominated by flexographic printing. The ability to print multiple colors in precise register on wide webs has since broadened the process's appeal to a wider array of point-of-purchase carton applications.

Contemporary folding carton manufacturing typically integrates the press with an in-line process, incorporating cutter-crease or platen die-cutting operations. These finishing steps were historically paired with rotogravure or sheet-fed offset presses. Advancements in flexographic print quality, combined with the adoption of water-based or UV inks and more cost-effective equipment, have established flexography as a viable option for high-quality folding carton production.

The design of folding carton equipment is heavily dictated by its substrate. These presses utilize heavy board roll stock, which necessitates higher tension levels, larger idle rolls, and more sophisticated splicing and control units. The unwind section must accommodate 72" diameter rolls and perform automatic butt splicing without overlaps. Idle rolls require a sufficiently large diameter to prevent the weakening of board fiber bonds or creasing of the material.

Web control presents a distinct challenge. From the unwind through the cooling drum to the out-feed unit, the web moves under constant tension. However, the motion becomes intermittent (stop-and-go) from that point to the cutter-creaser or platen die-cut section. Precise electronic print sensors are critical, as they register the printed image on the moving, tensioned web to the die cutter, which operates on a stationary, relaxed web.

Looking ahead to 2026, the folding carton sector continues to integrate higher levels of automation and digital workflow management. Sustainability remains a key driver, with a focus on efficient material use and the adoption of environmentally conscious inks and substrates. These trends are enhancing the flexibility and environmental profile of flexographic printing for packaging applications.
