Perfect Binding Production Lines: Linear and Rotary Types
Imported perfect binding equipment falls into two main families, and the difference is not only mechanical. The arrangement of the stations decides how a book block travels through milling, gluing and trimming, how much floor space the line needs, and how easily the configuration can be changed when the work mix shifts. Both families share the same core units and the same hot melt adhesive, so the choice usually comes down to the range of products a plant expects to run.
Linear High-Speed Perfect Binding Lines
On a linear line the book block moves along a straight track from the first station to the last. The usual build is a collating machine, a perfect binder, a three-knife trimmer and a stacking delivery, with hot melt adhesive as the main bonding material. A vertical windmill drying unit sits at the end of the binder, so the glued spine is dried before the block goes on to trimming.
Flexibility is the strength of this layout. Additional collating units can be inserted wherever production demands them. If bound blocks need inserts, an inserting machine can be added between the trimmer and the delivery. A line set up this way covers a broad range of jobs without being dismantled.
Process Flow on a Linear Line
Collated signatures climb toward the binder and are turned so that the spine faces down. After jogging, the block passes through milling, roughing, gluing, cover feeding and pressing. Since every station sits in one straight row, the block completes these steps without changing direction. Finished books enter a vertical rotating windmill drying wheel one at a time. From there they move to the three-knife trimmer, where head, tail and fore edge are cut in a single pass. Trimmed books are counted, and a conveyor carries them out of the line.
Fully Automatic Rotary Perfect Binding Lines
A fully automatic line uses a rotary disc for the binding section instead of a straight track, and hot melt adhesive is again the bonding agent. The main units are a collating machine, a disc type perfect binder, a three-knife trimmer and a stacking delivery. Large and medium printing houses use this format for books, magazines and booklets in long runs, where steady output matters more than quick changeovers.
Process Flow on a Rotary Line
Gathered signatures climb into the line and are turned upright. A first jogging station squares the block, and at station four a photoelectric detector reads the fold marks so that blocks with too many or too few sections are rejected. This check keeps incomplete books out of the glue path. Blocks that pass are jogged a second time, then clamped by the binder carriers.
As the carriers travel around the disc, each block passes through milling and roughing, positioning adjustment, gluing with crash gauze applied to the spine, cover feeding and pressing. Covered books run into a horizontal dryer for cooling and drying. A conveyor then delivers the single book blocks to the three-knife trimmer, and after trimming the books are counted, stacked and carried out of the line in groups.
Side Stitching and Thread Sewing Options
Two attachments extend what a rotary line can produce. When wire stitching is required, a side stitching unit can stitch blocks up to 19 mm thick with double saw wire. Milling and roughing are skipped in that case, and the block goes straight to gluing and cover attachment. When thread sewing is needed instead, the line can discharge loose sheets and signatures, so the same equipment feeds a second binding route. That output choice is what allows one investment to serve several kinds of books.
